Sunday, July, 8th 2007 - Fourteenth of Ordinary Time (C)

Dear Parishioner,

WE CONGRATULATE the nine young people who were confirmed last Tuesday at a wonderful ceremony with Bishop Edwin.  Many times in the past we have seen the young people being confirmed then failed to see them at Mass thereafter.  This year I feel it will be different.  Let us hope and pray that it is, and let parents and sponsors do all they can to ensure that it is.

SR ANTONIA phoned during the week to tell me that, now in her nineties, she feels that the time has come for her to cease the regular visitation of the hospital that she has been undertaking for many years.  We are so grateful to Sr Antonia for all the work she has done on behalf of the parish and for all her dedicated work for the SVP.  She tells me that she will be able to continue visiting some of the homes where the residents greatly appreciate and look forward to her visits.

THE SVP is the theme of our volunteer focus this week.  The campaign is going well, as we seek to increase the numbers of people engaged in the various organisations of our parish.  Last week, several people volunteered to give some of their time to help run Stella Maris, our parish and diocesan Centre, and we are so grateful to them.  But I am still looking for more volunteers to help out with the Guardian Angel Society, which has recently turned its entire focus on to visiting the hospital.  It is evident that this is really important parish work, and I would greatly welcome others to come forward to help.  With the new members, the workload for each has been reduced to visiting one ward of the hospital once a fortnight.  That’s heavy, though not too heavy.  Further volunteers would reduce the work further to visiting one ward every three weeks. That would be just about right.

The SVP does absolutely sterling work in our Parish and we can be rightly proud of it, thanking the members for all the work they do in the name of the Church.  Membership of the SVP links you with a worldwide network, provides you with a spiritual input at the weekly meeting and enables you to put your charitable aspirations into practice.  Like GAS, the SVP would also greatly welcome new members.  If you would be interested in joining the Society, please talk to their representatives who will be in the Chapel of Reconciliation (i.e. the Crying Room) after all the week-end Masses; or speak to Mr Toni Fossi, who is the SVP President, or to me.

TONI WRITES: The Llandudno Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society is seeking more volunteers to join and strengthen our Parish group.  Volunteering with the SVP is an opportunity to become part of a network of dedicated people making a difference to people’s lives.  We help families or individuals who may be in need of practical help and support, and try to serve them through person to person contact, irrespective of age, colour, creed, gender or ideology.  The Llandudno SVP Conference is involved in helping people in many different ways – we make visits to lonely, housebound or sick people and support them in every way we can.   One of the most heart rendering problems today is loneliness.  Some elderly people live entirely alone.  They may have no close relative or their children may be far away.  SVP members spend a lot of time visiting these housebound elderly people, preventing them from feeling isolated.  They appreciate a friendly face and enjoy a chat; they are happy to know that someone cares, that someone is keeping an eye on them.

Next week we will focus on the UCM in our Volunteer Campaign.  Special Mass for them on Monday at 730pm at SM

God bless you,

Fr Antony Jones
