Dear Parishioner,
If the church
is not quite as spic and span as it usually is, it is because we have
just completed the first phase of the rewiring. There was so much
dust around the place, it was unbelievable. Almost more mess even
than when the church was painted! That, of course, was because the
electricians were moving wires that had lain untouched for perhaps a
quarter of a century!
Because they had lain untouched for so long, this first phase was
vitally important. It has made the church completely safe from the
point of view of electrical fire risk. The next phase, when we
can afford it, will be to reorder the lighting, replacing the 60’s
chandeliers with modern concealed lighting. The church is so
beautiful that its beauty will only be fully displayed when the
lighting is as it should be. Just think what it will be like when
hidden lights draw attention to the beautiful wooden ceiling, with the
altar and tabernacle singled out for special attention.
Along with this work in the church, work has also been going apace, and
is now virtually completed, in Stella Maris. There was hidden
dampness in the back wall when the building was refurbished and we
didn’t pick it up. It caused problems. But now it has been
cured, though it was a high price to pay, with the plaster in the
dining area, the toilet and the hall having to be replaced. We will
have to wait for the new plaster to dry before we can repaper.
This could take several months. But David Swann has done a good
temporary emulsion job on it, and it looks OK. So business as
usual there now. It is good to know that the fundamental damp
problem has finally been solved.
If I sound confident, it is because I am. We are very grateful
indeed to John Dennison of the Finance Committee who has acted as Clerk
of Works and has ensured that the most competent of experts diagnosed
the problem, with the work being carried out by local builders.
He has been meticulous in his handling of the whole thing and we as a
parish are deeply grateful to him. His expertise, gained from a
working life in management, qualifies him perfectly for this
work. Every parish is supposed to have someone keeping an eagle
eye on the properties: John has accepted this responsibility and we are
very fortunate to have him. Before him it was me. He has
taken a huge load off my shoulders.
Two other matters in brief:
1) Keep an eye on the CTS booklets at the back of
the church. If you use these booklets advisably, you will be able
to deepen considerably your understanding of the Faith. We are
grateful to Sister Philo.
2) Colwyn Bay is experimenting with the times of its
Masses with changes being introduced in October. Consult the notice at
the back of the church.
God bless you,
Fr Antony Jones
