NEWSLETTER - EASTER 2 B

Dear Parishioner,

You will by now have heard the sad news that Canon O’Donovan has died. He has been very frail for a long time now and for the past few years has enjoyed retirement in Ruthin.  He died peacefully.

He gave twenty-five years of his life to the service of this parish as priest, eleven as Parish Priest and the rest as curate to Canon Pozzi and fellow curate with Fr Quigley.  They were among the happiest years of his life, and I know that those of you who knew him, remember him with deep affection.

There is just no telling how much good he did in this parish over those twenty-five years, good that is still percolating around all these years later.

His Vigil will be at Ruthin this Thursday evening; his body being taken into the church there at 7pm followed by Mass.

I have decided that we will have a special Memorial Mass for him here at the same time, namely at 730pm on Thursday.  I hope that many of you will come along to it.

His Funeral will be at the Cathedral on Friday at 12 noon.  It is possible that enough people could want to go to make the hiring of a bus a feasible possibility.  Otherwise, we could give one another lifts in our cars.

I have put a list in the porch which I ask you to fill; it will indicate the number of persons who would be interested in attending the funeral and those who would be prepared to give others a lift in their car.  From that list I will be able to decide whether to hire a bus or not, and, if not, how to arrange the lifts.

Bishop Edwin is celebrating his golden jubilee of priesthood this year, and a special Mass is being held on 5 July at the William Aston Hall in Wrexham to celebrate the occasion.  It will be a great gathering of the faithful, with cardinals and bishops in plentiful attendance.  Because of the expected crowd, the Mass is being held in this University Hall instead of the rather smaller cathedral.  But, even so, the numbers will have to be known and restricted, especially as the Mass will be followed by a buffet.  I am told that each parish will be allocated a number of tickets for the event.  At the moment, I do not know how many.  If you would like to attend this function, please sign on the list in the porch and when the numbers allocated are known we will draw the names out of a hat.

Each parish is being invited to make a collection for the Bishop, who will be taking a Sabbatical later on in the year in Jerusalem and will need some extra funds for that.  If you would like to donate something, please give it to Sr Jennifer between now and the middle of June.  (But please don’t say, “I’ll do that later” then forget about it!)

The photo on the front of today’s Newsletter reminds us of Holy Week and Easter and gives me the opportunity of putting in writing what I said from the pulpit: a very big Thank You to all who contributed to the smooth running of the Easter Services.  You yourself know in what way you did help, so please accept my thanks.  And if your contribution was simply to attend the ceremonies, then that is what it was all about.  And thank you for all the kind greetings, cards and Easter gifts you sent to me.  Sr Jennifer asks to be included in this Thank You.  The Altar Servers were particularly praiseworthy, serving the Lord with dignity and fidelity.

We decided that the Young Catholic Mothers’ Coffee Break and the Open House, both of which we have recently started, should operate only during school term times.  So, now that the children are back at their books, these two new enterprises get back into action this week.  If you are interested in learning to play Bridge, then your opportunity has arrived, for at the Open House there will be a “First Steps in Bridge” session.

The Baptism Team will be meeting with three sets of parents after today’s 930am Mass to help these young parents understand better the great sacrament their children will be receiving next Sunday.

God bless you,

Fr Antony Jones.
